The iPhone 4S was revealed October 4 in the United States, but there are people all over Latin America that accessed the reveal live online via social media. Though it will not be immediately available in Latin America until a later date, international fans are up-to-date on Apple´s announcement because they have created custom online and bilingual Apple news sources.

For example, on Facebook there are pages showing support for the new iPhone named Soporte Mac Apple Bogota. This page is unique because it is in Spanish and has a specific location in Bogota, Colombia. It also announces other Apple product launches and news. For English-speakers in Latin America, there are sources that anyone can follow from anywhere. On Twitter, fans can follow several hashtags that have been created as an Apple news feed. Some of the hashtags include #iphone5, #geekedout, and #fanboys. In the Bogota Twitter trends, the most popular are #iphone4s  and #letstalkiphone – though these feeds are still mostly in English.

As far as blogs go, anyone all over the world can access Wired Magazine´s Apple live blog release. Here, updates are posted minute-by-minute during the live roll out of iPhone4. ¨On October 28th, it’ll hit a bunch more countries, and by December, over 70 countries, over 100 carriers. This is the fastest roll out ever for an iPhone.¨ – Wired Magazine

What Happened to the iPhone 5?

Unfortunately, there was no mention of the iPhone 5. Though there was a lot of excitement around the iPhone 5, it will be launched at a later date. Because of this, there is some negative response. IPhone users are dropping or holding off on buying the iPhone 4S in order to wait for the iPhone 5. With the loss of Steve Jobs and iPhone 5 delay, these are two recent losses for Apple.

Understanding the difference between Twitter and Facebook begins with looking at how each one is used. Though they are both thought of as community management tools, they are unique in their content, purpose, and audience. Twitter´s International User Demographics:

Though people spend more time on Facebook, time spent on Twitter is growing. According to The Huffington Post, Twitter users may spend less time per session one Twitter, but they access the page more frequently, meaning that the sessions are shorter but more often at about 10 visits per month.

This may have to do with the 140 character limit, causing tweets content to be short and direct. Because of the limited space, this is a great format for news, tips, and gossip. Also great for people who are busy and do not have a lot of time to post lengthy blog posts. For this reason, tweeting is called ¨micro blogging¨ and works well for celebrities, industry experts, and brands. Users of Twitter are also more likely to access it from a mobile phone rather than a computer. It´s short content also makes responce time faster and many brands use this to provide quick customer service.

Internationally, Twitter is growing even faster. Usage in Latin America grew 305% from 2009 to 2010. Facebook Launched in Spanish:

In Latin America, Facebook users in Brazil grew 133% this year and it has become a leader in the region. Behind Brazil, other top users are Argentina, Colombia, and Peru. This may be because Facebook launched a Spanish version in February. Amazingly, all the translations on Facebook were made via crowd-sourcing — 1,500 users translated 40,000 sentences in under four weeks.

Unlike Twitter, users of Facebook spend longer time on their profile per session. This is likely due to the fact that Facebook is more social and intimate than Twitter. For example, while twitter is a great way to contact celebrities, Facebook contacts consists of only your inner circle of friends — people that you know personally. Because of its limited social reach, Facebook is not a good tool for news and networking. Instead, users spend more time sharing, commenting, and chatting. Unlike Twitter, users are likely to spend more time online because it is more often accessed from a computer.

Some good news is that, internationally, Facebook usage is growing as 70% of its users live outside of the U.S and Facebook is available in more than 70 languages. This provides insight into a growing audience for international businesses or local businesses who seek to expand their business to new markets. When it comes to industries with an international reach such as technology, this can be a growing source for outsourcing opportunities.

Another insight into why there is a decrease in usage is that Facebook is no longer the only leading media for online advertising and digital marketing. It shows that digital marketing now needs to be a full social media campaign that includes a mix of content and strategy. This approach to digital marketing is known as community management. Community management goes beyond just posting status updates on Facebook. It includes a wider reach into blogs, video, and other social media outlets.
